The Dichotomy of War and Peace

• Course Description / 講義の概要

  This seminar is about war and peace. While exploring about the dichotomous nature of war and peace, we will specifically focus on the following questions:
  - What is peace? What is a distinction between positive peace and negative peace?
  - What is structural violence and root causes of violence?
  - Why war? What is politics as warfare?
  - What are the causes and consequences of war and peace?

  Two main approaches will be applied to the seminar: 1) theoretical/conceptual approach －we will read, think, analyze the world's selected texts on war and peace, and 2) practical approach －we will learn how to use empirical methods through domestic and overseas fieldwork. Fieldworks are important components of this seminar, therefore students will need to participate in them (some possible sites include but are nore limited to Hiroshima/ Nagasaki Peace Memorials, Yushukan War Memorial Museum in Tokyo, Okinawa Peace Memorial Park; overseas - War Memory Sites in Korea and Taiwan, Genocide Memorials in Poland, Rwanda, etc).

  → Get knowledge about the concepts and theories of war and peace.
  → Acquire new skills such as empirical assessment and critical analysis by reading academic texts and conducting domestic/overseas fieldworks.
  → Appreciate the different perspectives, values and practices prevailing in different parts of the world with regard to peace and conflict resolution.

  Prerequisite / 事前履修科目等

  1) Willingness to learn and challenge oneself while learning
  2) Good command of English

  Additional Information / 留意点

  The timing and schedule of practical part of the seminar, such as domestic and overseas fieldworks, will depend upon the availability of school or other funds.
