Tama University School of Global Studies (SGS) offers exchange students the chance to embark on a journey of personal and cultural discovery in the classroom and beyond. Study Japanese language while taking courses on culture, global issues, and business in English or Japanese. As an exchange student, you’ll enjoy the benefits of small class sizes and individual attention on our intimate campus nestled just an hour away from the excitement of ultra-modern Tokyo and 45 minutes from the cultured refinement of historic Yokohama. Discover Japan and gain a new view of the world.
Studying Japanese
Japanese classes for intermediate and advanced students meet twice weekly. Small class sizes ensure ample opportunity for individual attention. Students of intermediate Japanese build on their foundational skills, focusing on complex sentence patterns and expressions while continuing to study kanji. Study continues at the advanced level, where students focus on expressing ideas and opinions about current events and cultural topics while reading newspapers, magazines, and Internet articles. We tailor beginner-level study to each student’s needs through individualized study plans. Japanese study support is also available.
Content Courses
Content courses at SGS center on global studies. Students will find a variety of classes taught in Japanese and English on subjects like language and culture, hospitality management, global issues and international studies, psychology, anthropology, and more. Contact International Affairs for information on current course offerings.

From our student…
I chose SGS because it offers an intimate setting. This provided me with great support and a warm start for my study in Japan. I connected with the students, studied together with them, and made new friends. SGS offers business and culture courses in English, so you can deepen your knowledge of Japanese society and culture while improving your Japanese and getting study support. There are international students from different countries, so you can also learn about many cultures. You’ll come to understand Japan and its people better. When you encounter questions in daily life, you can always go to International Affairs and get help right away. Oh, and don´t worry about your Japanese: they speak great English! My studies at Tama SGS have been one of the best times of my life.
