Admissions Policy
For prospective students.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
1. Citizenship. Be a citizen of any country other than Japan. (International students)
1. Citizenship. Be a citizen of Japan. (Overseas Returnees)
2. Age. Be at least 18 years of age by the date of prospective admission.
3. Language proficiency. Meet one of the following:
- Non-native Japanese speakers: English proficiency of at least TOEIC 600, or equivalent, and Japanese proficiency of at least JLPT-N3, or equivalent.
- Native Japanese speakers: English proficiency of at least TOEIC 350.
Note: Japanese proficiency of non-Japanese speaking applicants without JLPT-N3 certification or its equivalent may be assessed by interview, etc.
4. Education. Applicants must meet one (1) of the following requirements:
- Completion of high school or secondary school with 12 years of formal education accredited by a competent authority in a foreign country prior to entry to School of Global Studies (SGS);
- Graduation from an international school accredited by an international organization, such as WASC, ACSI, or CIS; or,
- Acquisition of an International Baccalaureate Diploma, Abitur, Baccalaureate, or equivalent, as approved by Tama University.
- Completion of Japanese school or a secondary school for Japanese citizens outside of Japan accredited by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT Japan).
Applicants who do not meet the above educational requirements must contact SGS prior to applying. It is the responsibility of the applicant to confirm eligibility for application for admission to SGS. The following applicants, for instance, need to contact SGS:
- Applicants who have completed fewer than 12 years of formal education in a foreign country;
- Applicants who have a diploma from a correspondence, home-school, online, or similar education system outside of Japan; or,
- Applicants from international schools not accredited by the aforementioned organizations.
Note 1: You may be asked to submit additional or supplemental documents in order to confirm your eligibility for admission.
Note 2: In case that you are found ineligible to apply for admission, your application fee will be refunded.
Note 3: You will be refunded your tuition and fees in the event that you are not issued a certificate of eligibility by the Immigration Bureau of Japan. However, in this case, your application fee will not be refunded.
