School of Management
and Information Sciences
Tama University has two departments under the School of Management and Information Sciences: the Department of Management and Information Sciences and the Department of Project Design, which are both exclusively taught in Japanese. The two departments share an educational philosophy of fostering students with innovative ideas. We emphasize the development and continuous improvement of critical analytical skills, problem solving, creativity, and effective communication. We have programs to facilitate students in establishing their own philosophy and in bringing their innovative ideas into practice.
Seminar-oriented Curriculum
The most prominent feature of the undergraduate program at Tama University is our emphasis on the importance of “dialog” based seminar-style education. We believe that a “dialog” based seminar-oriented university will serve as a catalyst for transforming other Japanese universities that are currently experiencing various difficulties. Seminar-style education allows one to learn knowledge or wisdom more deeply than lecture-style education through human contact and dialog. Seminars are places for students and teachers to discuss class content freely. Thus, our university is a “tutoring school” where not only “knowledge” but also “wisdom” – such as the teacher’s philosophy of life or way of thinking – is acquired.
We offer a number of styles of seminars, for example, the “home seminar,” where students study under the same professor from their sophomore year until graduation. We boast faculty members with diverse specializations and backgrounds. Students join these diverse seminars to learn various approaches for solving social issues.
① Seminars for identifying social issues
Example: Examining a single piece of literature from multiple angles
② Seminars for developing skills to solve social issues
Example: Programming and data analysis
③ Seminars for implementing solutions to social issues
Example: Operating a cafe to revitalize the local community
Our School of Management and Information Sciences cultivates individuals who can work meaningfully at the forefront of industrial society while creating their own lives. Our aspiration as a university is to earnestly support students in comprehensively studying business and information, enabling them to thrive at the cutting edge of our highly information-driven society and forge their own paths.
The advancement of AI is beginning to surpass human intellectual activities, and intellectual professions supported by knowledge acquisition and logical thinking skills will be replaced by AI. To be active in meaningful work in such an era, it is necessary to acquire the ability to develop ideas unconstrained by fixed frameworks, as well as leadership and communication skills backed by passion. The ability to utilize AI with a high sense of ethics is also required. To cultivate these abilities, the School of Management and Information Sciences focuses on: (1) Understanding the history and current state of industrial society, (2) Acquiring problem-solving methods and skills centered on information technology, and (3) Developing qualities and competencies that enhance human capabilities.
