Eligibility Requirements for International Students

Applicants must meet all of the requirements (1)-(4) below.

(1) Must hold a nationality other than Japanese.

(2) Must fall under one of the following categories:

1. Those who have completed, or are expected to complete by the time of enrollment at this university, 12 years of formal school education abroad and who possess university entrance qualifications in that country, or those deemed equivalent and designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

Note: Even if an applicant has completed a course of study at a school abroad equivalent to an upper secondary school but is regarded as having completed only 12 years of formal schooling, university entrance eligibility will be recognized provided that the course meets requirements such as comprising 12 or more years of education and being designated by MEXT. However, applicants applying on the basis of expected completion of 12 or more years of formal education who fail to graduate by the time of enrollment will not be admitted.

2. Among those designated by MEXT, persons who hold one of the following qualifications:

  • The International Baccalaureate (IB) awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization, a foundation established under the Swiss Civil Code
  • The Abitur, recognized as a university entrance qualification in the states of the Federal Republic of Germany
  • The Baccalauréat, recognized as a university entrance qualification in the French Republic
  • The General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level, recognized as a university entrance qualification in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
  • Those who have completed (or are expected to complete) an international school in Japan designated by MEXT

3. Those who are recognized by this university, through an individual admission eligibility screening, as having academic ability equivalent to or higher than that of a high school graduate.

(3) Must be able to obtain or renew the status of residence “Student” under the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act as a student of this university.

Note: Under the Act, the scope of activities permitted for holders of the “Student” status of residence is defined as “activities to receive education at a university or an institution equivalent thereto in Japan, a specialized course of a vocational school, an institution that provides education to persons who have completed 12 or more years of formal education abroad for the purpose of entering a university in Japan, or a college of technology,” with the condition that such education is not received exclusively through night classes or correspondence courses.

(4) Must be able to remain enrolled, until enrollment at this university, in a Japanese-language educational institution or a vocational school in which the applicant is enrolled at the time of application to this university.

Note: “Japanese-language educational institutions or vocational schools” refer to Japanese language schools, Japanese-language programs (bekka) at universities or junior colleges, and other specialized training colleges.

Note: Requirement (4) applies only to applicants who have a registered address in Japan at the time of application (i.e., those registered in the Basic Resident Register).
